Just saw news from the Ethereum Foundation that they’ve set up a new DeFi team, and this seems like a fairly serious step toward supporting the true DeFi vision.

What’s interesting is that they’re not only establishing an organization, but also selecting people with real-world experience. Charles St. Louis, who previously served as CEO of DELV and helped design MakerDAO’s governance, now leads this team as a DeFi Protocol Specialist alongside Ivan, co-founder of Gearbox Protocol, who serves as the DeFi Coordinator.

What makes it even more intriguing is the concept of “DeFipunk” they’re discussing. As Charles St. Louis explains, DeFi shouldn’t just be an upgrade to traditional financial systems, but rather a system that exists only on Ethereum—meaning permissionless, censorship-resistant, privacy-focused, self-managed, and open-source.

It seems the Ethereum Foundation is genuinely serious about supporting projects that align with these principles—not just projects that look like DeFi but lack its spirit. This new team will be guided under Jason Chaskin, who leads the App Relations team overall.
