On April 28, hundreds of artificial intelligence researchers at Google (GOOG.O), a subsidiary of Alphabet, signed a letter urging CEO Sundar Pichai to reject the use of the company’s AI systems for classified U.S. defense tasks. “As Google employees, we are deeply concerned about the ongoing negotiations between Google and the U.S. Department of Defense,” the statement read. The letter was issued amid a legal dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic regarding the application of AI in the military sector. The Pentagon is seeking to exclude Anthropic and its Claude AI tools from the U.S. defense supply chain and is looking for new partnerships with major tech companies in AI.
