I just noticed a pretty interesting event in the Layer 2 space last year. Aztec Network — a project supported by a16z — officially launched its Alpha Mainnet, and this is a noteworthy step.

What makes Aztec Network different? It is built with a unique philosophy regarding security and privacy. Instead of handling everything publicly like typical Layer 2 solutions, Aztec allows smart contracts to be written in Noir — a language inspired by Rust — and security logic is executed directly on the user side. This means you generate zero-knowledge proofs without revealing sensitive data.

The validation process occurs on Ethereum, with approximately 12 seconds per settlement. This is the first time an Ethereum Layer 2 has full smart contract execution capabilities in such a private environment.

However, it’s important to note that this is still the Alpha stage. Aztec has disclosed some security vulnerabilities that have been identified, and the auditing process is ongoing. If you want to learn about Aztec Network and try it out, only deposit funds you can afford to lose. This is an exciting technological experiment, but it still carries risks.
