Golden Finance reports that on April 27, according to the Financial Times of the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom’s science and technology minister expressed concern about Prime Minister Starmer’s much-praised “EU restart” plan, believing it could “stifle” innovation in areas ranging from artificial intelligence to laboratory-grown meat. Sources familiar with the matter said that the Prime Minister’s plan to strengthen ties with the European Union is expected to keep the UK aligned with the vast majority of EU regulations. However, some UK officials worry that this could harm the UK’s technology industry and its alliance with the United States.

A person familiar with internal discussions in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said that, to date, the biggest concern is that the UK will be forced to adopt the EU’s position on AI regulation. The person noted that the European Commission has “been demanding alignment from the very beginning.” The person said, “The market believes that allowing the UK to develop its way gives companies operational freedom and attracts investment. In addition, the United States specifically has seen this freedom, directing their investment and establishing bases here. We need exemptions, but it’s difficult to obtain them in negotiations like this.” (East New Agency)
