Just now, I checked the latest data and it turns out Bitcoin has already surpassed 20 million BTC in circulation. The supply that has already been produced totals 20,021,312 BTC, meaning that nearly 95% of the total 21 million has already been mined. Mind-blowing—if you calculate from here, there’s less than 1 million BTC left to reach the maximum limit.
What’s interesting is how much Bitcoin is actually held by Satoshi Nakamoto himself. This Bitcoin founder has never had his ownership fully revealed, but there’s speculation that he owns around 1 million BTC from the early mining days. If that’s true, it means Satoshi has control over a significant portion of the Bitcoin supply, even though he has never actively moved his coins.
As for the last 1 million BTC, it will be mined over the next more than 100 years. With halving events occurring every 4 years, the production rate keeps slowing down. Right now, only about 450 BTC are mined per day. If it continues like this, predictions show that 99% of the supply will already exist before 2035, and the final mining will be completed around 2140. So basically, Bitcoin is a truly scarce asset.
