Xpeng Motors Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng recently reiterated his ambitious goal at the Beijing Auto Show: to surpass Tesla in autonomous driving capabilities in China by August of this year. Although Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system has not yet been approved for the Chinese market, making direct comparison difficult, He Xiaopeng stated that Xpeng’s Visual Language Actions (VLA) system has already exceeded Tesla’s in some complex driving scenarios. “We have set a goal for ourselves: by August, to fully surpass Tesla’s FSD system in the Chinese market,” He Xiaopeng said at a media briefing during the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show. “China’s driving environment is more complex. If we can surpass it here, our overall strength will be even greater,” he added. In December last year, He Xiaopeng posted on social media that he bet with the Xpeng autonomous driving team that by August 30, 2026, Xpeng VLA would successfully achieve the same effect as Tesla FSD V14.2 in Silicon Valley.
