#USTechSelloff AI Infrastructure Sold, Applications Next? What the 5 November Closes Say About Rotation

Thursday's close showed how sharply the AI trade came apart. Chips and data-center names took the heaviest losses, while the software and platform names held up better. The question now is whether that gap is the start of a rotation from AI infrastructure into AI applications, where the revenue is more immediate and the capex risk is lower.

What the closing prints show

From the Gate feed's 5 November closes: Alphabet closed at $282.57, down 2.20%. Microsoft closed at $535.93, down 3.58%.

My View on Microsoft (MSFT): Why I Remain Bullish Long-Term Despite Recent Volatility

I am currently net bullish on Microsoft over a 12–24 month horizon, while remaining selective on near-term entries after the sharp market swings of the past week.

The stock closed around $530–531 on November 6, 2026, after dropping roughly 3.6% on November 5 from the previous day’s close near $556. That put it about 5% below its recent 52-week high of $559.15 set on November 4. Year-to-date the shares are still up in the low double digits, and they sit roughly 50%+ above th

The milestone was reached on Monday, roughly a year after the company first crossed it in July 2025. The move follows the unveiling of Microsoft's next-generation Maia 300 AI chip, which the company says can handle more useful computing per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems.

When four of the world's largest companies are all in the same sector, what does that concentration mean for the broader market? 👇

The Week That Could Reset Market Expectations: My Focus Is on Microsoft
October 26–30 is a week when several major catalysts could reshape market sentiment. The Federal Reserve’s policy decision, US GDP and PCE data, and earnings from leading technology companies will give investors a clearer picture of whether economic strength and AI-driven growth can justify current market expectations.

My top pick is $MSFT. Microsoft sits at the intersection of cloud computing, enterprise software, and artificial intelligence. The key question is not simply whether earnings beat estimates, but whether Azu

Microsoft reported its fiscal fourth-quarter results on July 29, 2026, after market close, and the numbers significantly outperformed Wall Street expectations. The company delivered adjusted earnings per share of $4.74 against the consensus estimate of $4.24, representing an impressive 11.79 percent beat. Revenue came in at $90.01 billion, surpassing the expected $87.62 billion by 2.74 percent. Net income reached $35.77 billion or $4.81 per share, a substantial increase from $27.23 billion or $3.65 per share in the same quarter last year. The results included a $3.2 billion gain from Microsoft's investment in AI lab Anthropic and lower-than-expected costs from its first-ever voluntary retirement program for US employees.

Microsoft has delivered one of the strongest earnings reports of 2026, restoring investor confidence in its AI strategy and cloud business.

Following the release of its fiscal fourth-quarter results, the stock surged more than 9% in pre-market trading, climbing from the previous close of $390.54 to around $426.93. The rally added roughly $270 billion to Microsoft's market value, making it one of the company's biggest single-session gains in history and signaling that Wall Street believes Microsoft's AI investments are beginning to generate meaningful financial returns.

The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.74, comfortably beating analyst expectations of $4.24. Quarterly revenue reached $90.01 billion, exceeding estimates of $87.62 billion, while net income climbed to $35.77 billion from $27.23 billion a year earlier.

Full-year revenue surpassed $331 billion, increasing 18% year over year, while operating income rose 21%. Microsoft's cloud business generated more than $214 billion in annual revenue, and Azure crossed the historic $100 billion annual revenue milestone for the first time.

Azure remained the clear growth engine of the business. Revenue in the Intelligent Cloud segment reached $39.31 billion as Azure grew 43% year over year, significantly ahead of market expectations. Even more encouraging, management guided for approximately 45% Azure growth in the next quarter, suggesting demand for AI infrastructure and cloud services continues to accelerate. Microsoft also revealed that commercial remaining performance obligations reached an impressive $678 billion, providing exceptional visibility into future revenue and demonstrating the strength of long-term enterprise contracts.

The Productivity and Business Processes division also delivered another outstanding quarter. Revenue climbed to $37.85 billion as Microsoft 365, Dynamics, and LinkedIn continued expanding. Microsoft 365 Copilot reached 30 million paid seats, compared with 20 million only a few months ago, highlighting rapid enterprise adoption of AI-powered productivity tools. GitHub Copilot now serves more than 50 million users, strengthening Microsoft's leadership in developer-focused artificial intelligence.

The only weak area remained More Personal Computing. Revenue declined 4.4% to $12.85 billion as Windows OEM demand softened due to continued weakness in the global PC market.

Xbox revenue also declined, reflecting ongoing restructuring efforts within Microsoft's gaming division. While these businesses remain under pressure, investors largely ignored the weakness because cloud and AI growth continues to dominate Microsoft's overall financial performance.

Several factors explain the market's enthusiastic reaction. The biggest was clear evidence that Microsoft's enormous AI infrastructure investments are translating into faster Azure growth rather than simply increasing expenses.

The company also maintained operating margins near 45%, proving it can continue investing aggressively without sacrificing profitability. Strong earnings quality, improving guidance, and the massive $678 billion commercial backlog reinforced confidence that Microsoft's growth momentum can continue for years rather than quarters.

Wall Street remains overwhelmingly optimistic.

Most analysts continue to rate Microsoft as a Strong Buy, with an average 12-month price target near $555, implying meaningful upside from current levels. Many analysts believe Microsoft's unmatched combination of Azure, Microsoft 365, GitHub, LinkedIn, OpenAI technology integration, and enterprise relationships creates one of the strongest competitive positions in the global AI industry.

As AI adoption expands across businesses worldwide, Microsoft appears positioned to capture a significant share of future enterprise spending.

From a technical perspective, the earnings gap has dramatically improved the chart. Before results, Microsoft traded below major moving averages and remained trapped inside a long-term downtrend. The post-earnings rally pushed the stock above key resistance levels and now places the 200-day moving average near $438 in focus. A sustained breakout above that level could confirm a long-term trend reversal and potentially open the path toward the $500 area over the coming months. Initial support now sits around $422, followed by the previous breakout zone near $403 if profit-taking occurs.

Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor Azure growth, Copilot adoption, free cash flow recovery, and AI monetization. Microsoft continues investing heavily in data centers, which temporarily pressures cash flow, but management believes those investments will support years of recurring cloud revenue. If Azure maintains growth above 40% while enterprise AI adoption continues accelerating, Microsoft's premium valuation appears increasingly justified.

Despite continued risks from rising capital expenditures, cloud competition, regulatory scrutiny, and broader macroeconomic uncertainty, Microsoft's latest earnings strongly suggest the company has entered a new phase of AI-driven expansion. The combination of accelerating cloud demand, record backlog, expanding enterprise AI adoption, and disciplined execution reinforces Microsoft's position as one of the world's highest-quality technology companies. For long-term investors, this quarter may represent the moment when Microsoft's massive AI investments shifted from a future promise to a measurable financial reality, making the company one of the strongest beneficiaries of the global artificial intelligence revolution.

$MSFT is a good reminder that a strong company doesn’t always mean a good entry.

I’m watching price structure first. If buyers can push through resistance and hold above it, that would give me more confidence.

Until then, patience makes more sense to me.

Would you wait for confirmation or take an early position?
