Vitalik Buterin Reveals "Lean Ethereum" Ethereum's Biggest Evolution Since The Merge
On July 4, 2026, Vitalik Buterin introduced Lean Ethereum, describing it as Ethereum's third major evolution after the 2022 Merge.
«"Make no mistake, this IS the third major iteration of Ethereum in the same way that the Merge was the second." Vitalik Buterin»
Developed following researcher meetings in Berlin and earlier client discussions in Svalbard, the proposal places quantum resistance, privacy, and scalability at the center of Ethereum's long-term future.
🔹 The Four Pillars of Lean Ethereum
1️⃣ Recursive STARKs
- Replace direct transaction re-execution with native recursive STARK verification.
- Makes proof composition a core protocol feature instead of an external layer.
2️⃣ Post-Quantum Cryptography
Ethereum plans to replace quantum-vulnerable cryptography across:
- Blob data
- Consensus
- Transaction verification
- Other critical protocol components
Vitalik noted quantum security has "shifted up a LOT in priority," with development already underway for months.
3️⃣ Scalable State Architecture
- Targets 100 TB state capacity by 2030
- Expected to reduce transaction costs for certain token types by more than 10x
4️⃣ RISC-V / leanISA Virtual Machines
- Enables programmable privacy
- Supports selective disclosure while maintaining blockchain transparency
🚀 Glamsterdam Upgrade (Late August 2026)
Ethereum's biggest hard fork since The Merge introduces:
✅ EIP-7732
- Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS)
- Moves block building on-chain
- Reduces MEV extraction by up to 70%
✅ EIP-7928
- Block-Level Access Lists (BALs)
- Enables parallel transaction execution
- Gas limit increases from 60M → 200M
- Long-term target of 10,000 TPS
✅ EIP-7904
- Gas repricing
- Estimated 78.6% reduction in Layer-1 transaction fees
Additional improvements:
- Blob capacity potentially increases to 72+ blobs per block
- Layer-2 networks could process hundreds of thousands of TPS
- New Ethereum Interoperability Layer enables seamless communication across L2 ecosystems
🌍 Hegota Upgrade (Late 2026)
Combining:
- Heze (Consensus Layer)
- Bogota (Execution Layer)
Hegota will:
- Redesign Ethereum's storage architecture
- Improve censorship resistance
- Support a 100M+ gas limit
- Introduce a new asset interaction model
Vitalik stated that a 2-year implementation timeline appears "between possible and likely," but emphasized that Lean Ethereum remains a strawmap not a fixed schedule.
🏛 Ethereum Foundation Restructuring
The Foundation has also undergone its largest organizational overhaul:
• 20% staff reduction
• 40% operating budget cut
• R&D division renamed to Protocol
• 9 senior leaders departed during 2026
Many view these changes as a strategic consolidation aimed at accelerating protocol development rather than scaling back.
📊 Market Snapshot
ETH Price: ~$1,762
The conversation is increasingly shifting beyond short-term price action toward a larger question:
Can Lean Ethereum successfully deliver scalability, quantum resistance, and programmable privacy without disrupting the ecosystem already built on Ethereum?
