Why, as the US-Iran conflict escalates, has BTC instead fallen below $82k?
More than 90% of the positions liquidated in the past 24 hours were longs.
100k people, $441 million, wiped out in one sweep. Bitcoin plunged from $84.8k to $81k, its biggest drop in two weeks. Gold is falling too. Spot gold in London fell below $4,100, hitting an intraday low of $4,005.
By the old playbook, if the US and Iran are heading for war, you should buy gold and BTC. Instead, the two “safe-haven assets” are holding hands on the way down.
The US and Israel are drawing up plans to strike Iran after the midterm elections. Trump says “we won’t strike before the election,” but the military is updating its plans and deploying more ships. The market isn’t stupid; it’s pricing this in early.
The problem is that war expectations are driving up oil prices, not gold. Brent crude briefly topped $112.
For every dollar oil prices rise, inflation expectations climb another notch. Rising inflation expectations mean the rate-hike narrative keeps a firm grip on all risk assets—including BTC and gold. An analyst at Shenwan Futures said tensions in the Middle East are pushing up oil prices, heightening inflation risks and rate-hike expectations, and weighing on non-yielding assets such as gold.
In plain English: the market isn’t trading “war is coming,” but rather “the inflation caused by war will give the Fed even less reason to let up.”
That’s why BTC’s role has changed.
It is no longer “digital gold.” In this pricing framework, it’s a high-beta risk asset, in the same boat as Nasdaq tech stocks. That day, Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.7%, Tesla dropped 5%, and semiconductor stocks broadly declined. BTC followed more closely than anything else.
When war becomes a catalyst for rate hikes, BTC bulls become hostages in a geopolitical standoff.
That same day, the yield on French 10-year government bonds surpassed US Treasury yields for the first time in 13 years, touching 5.15% intraday. France’s public debt stands at €3.6 trillion, its deficit ratio is 5.4%, and unrest is escalating.
As capital flees risk assets, it is also fleeing the fiat credibility of heavily indebted countries. This is a deeper signal: global fiscal fractures are widening, and there is no truly “safe asset” for the market to hide in.
Glassnode’s on-chain data points to a range of $80k to $87k. Around $80k, ETFs and corporate treasuries provide cost-basis support, but the scale is smaller than at the peak. Yi Lihua believes the bull market trend remains intact and that prices will rebound quickly after bottoming; Killa’s analysis of historical midterm-election cycles found that in 2018, the bottom came 40–44 days after the election, suggesting this time the low could be above $80k.
These assessments may all be right. But before the Fed’s October 28 decision and the direction of oil prices become clear, any “buying the dip” is a bet on a variable you can’t control.
Gold and BTC falling at the same time doesn’t mean the market has gone crazy. The market is telling you in the clearest possible terms: in the face of inflation, there are no safe-haven assets, only victims being repriced.
