BTC at $79,900—would you catch it?
The Fed just turned hawkish, and whales dumped 8,000 BTC in 24 hours, sending BTC down to 79,900—but the RSI is already oversold. Is this the bottom, or one last flush before the bottom?
Someone in the group is calling for “a return to 60k.” Your finger is hovering over the close button. You want to cut your losses, but you’re afraid of selling at the floor.
I get it. Every key support level is a retail trader’s execution ground.
First: The Fed didn’t kill you. The words “higher for longer” did.
On October 28, the FOMC held rates at 3.75%-4.00%, as expected. But the statement changed its description of the economy from “solid” to “strong,” while still calling inflation “elevated.” Two officials directly advocated for a rate hike.
BTC surged to 81,700 after the meeting, then fell back during the Asian session. The probability of a December rate hike briefly soared to 70%-85%.
The market isn’t afraid of rates staying put; it’s afraid that “the economy is too strong, so rates can’t be cut.”
But note—the hawkish signals are already partly priced in. The real verdict comes with Q3 GDP on October 29 and September PCE. Core PCE is expected at 3.6%. If it comes in hot, 79,000 won’t hold; if inflation cools, a rebound could be imminent.
Second: Whales cut holdings by 8,000 BTC—are you panicking? ETFs are still buying.
Whales cut their holdings by more than 8,000 BTC in 24 hours, which sounds scary. But on the same day, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of about $137 million, mainly into IBIT.
ETFs did see outflows earlier in the month, but buyers are still showing up now. BTC has fallen from its October 2025 ATH of 126k to where it is now, a 36% drawdown, while leveraged longs have been liquidated in wave after wave.
Third: The technical picture is a tightrope walk, with 79,000 as the line in the sand.
After falling from 84,500-85,000, BTC broke below the 50-day EMA (80,700-81,700) and is now testing 79,000-80,000. The daily RSI is at 34-40, oversold but without a clear divergence yet. Trading volume rose during the decline, with long liquidations driving the move.
The daily structure shows lower highs and a choppy downtrend.
Hold 79,000 and reclaim 81,000 on strong volume: a short-term bottom may be forming.
Break below 79,000 with 4H confirmation: opens up room to 76,000.
Bulls vs. bears: you decide
On one side:
ETFs are still seeing net inflows, with IBIT absorbing supply
Post-halving supply is tightening, with 20.1 million BTC in circulation and hashrate near its highs
BTC dominance is 59%, showing relative resilience against altcoins
RSI is oversold, and leveraged positions have been flushed out
On the other side:
The Fed is hawkish, with a 70%-85% chance of a December rate hike
PCE/GDP data risks, Treasury yields near 5%, and a strong dollar
Whales taking profits, and a technical breakdown
Month-end options expiry + November midterm elections could amplify volatility
Key levels
Resistance above: 80,500-81,000 (former support turned resistance + moving averages) → 81,700-82,500 → 84,000+
Support below: 79,600-79,000 (recent low + Fibonacci) → 77,000-78,000 (structure/cost zone) → 76,000
Trading strategy
Short term (1-3 days):
If 79,600-79,000 holds and a strong-volume rebound reclaims 80,500, try a small long position, targeting 81,000-81,700, with a stop below 78,800.
If 79,000 breaks and the 4H candle closes below it, go short, targeting 78,000-77,000, with a stop above 79,500.
Keep leverage within 5-10x and position size at 5-10%.
Medium term (1-2 weeks):
Scale into dips near 79,000 and reduce positions at 81,000-82,500; if 77,000 breaks, stay on the sidelines or hedge.
Wait for three signals: PCE/GDP data released + continued ETF inflows + reclaiming the 50-day moving average. Only consider a medium-term bullish position after BTC holds above 81,000.
Long term:
The current price is near structural support, so you can dollar-cost average in, but short-term volatility is high—don’t go all in. The halving can’t save your short-term trade, but it can save your long-term position.
Use strict stop losses and never go all in. Watch liquidation heatmaps and funding rates; the current bias is neutral to bearish. If you’re worried about systemic risk, use options or reduce your overall exposure.
BTC is like it was in late 2022—
Everyone was waiting for lower prices, then it took off when nobody believed it would. But don’t gamble this time. 79,900 is neither a bottom nor a top; it’s a mirror that reveals who’s betting and who’s waiting.
You’re afraid of the drop. The big players are afraid you won’t sell.
