July nonfarm payrolls unexpectedly fell by 23,000, while the previous two months were revised down by a combined 103,000 jobs. The unemployment rate moved slightly lower to 4.1%, but the headline improvement is less convincing when we look underneath it: the labor-force participation rate dropped to 61.4% as hundreds of thousands of people left the labor force.
