CPI may exclude rent, food, and energy, making the report look cleaner, but ordinary people still have to spend every cent on groceries, gas, and rent. I understand why core CPI excludes food and energy. And if you want to go a step further and exclude rent to analyze underlying inflation trends, that’s fine too. The problem is, if you use that as evidence that “inflation is under control,” you’re kind of misleading people. Rent is real money coming out of people’s pockets. Excluding it makes the report look better, but it doesn’t make life any easier.
