Ethereum Layer-2 Fees Fell Below a Cent as Blob Usage Hit a Record
A cheap block is now the norm, not a promo. Ethereum layer-2 fees fell below one cent for five days in a row as blob space use hit a record high. EIP-4844 blobs averaged 5.2 per block, up 41% week over week, and L2 posting cost dropped 68%. Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism led the drop, with median user cost at $0.004 to $0.008. Throughput held above 180 TPS across the group without a rise in failed txs.
The driver is simple. More blobs means less call data on L1. Base batched 2,800 tx per blob and cut its L1 bill by $210k per day. Gaming and social apps burned less than $1,000 to mint 500k items, so teams turned on gas sponsorship. Smart accounts with passkeys did the rest. New wallets funded in under five minutes rose 63%.
DeFi felt it first. Aerodrome on Base flipped $380 million daily volume with 1-2 bps spreads. Uniswap v4 hooks on Arbitrum added limit orders that cost $0.02 to place. Aave v3 on the three chains saw borrow rates fall 40 bps as idle USDC moved to low-cost venues.
Liquidity did not split. Chainlink CCIP and LayerZero v2 moved $1.1 billion between L2s, with finality under 90 seconds. Slippage on $5 million ETH swaps fell 4 bps, a sign books are deep on all sides.
Risk to watch is blob fees. If blobs fill, base fee can spike. For now, supply still exceeds use, and the next upgrade will lift blob count per block. Cheap blocks bring users, users bring fees, fees fund apps. The loop is live.
