The Iberian Derby Starts Today at 3PM ET on VS. The Most Anticipated World Cup Round of 16 Game All Around! Portugal Spain.

AT&T Stadium Arlington.

3PM ET.

One step away from the quarterfinal. THIS is the matchup the entire soccer world has been looking forward to since the bracket was set and this kicks off in just hours! Let me give you the full breakdown for tactics and the prediction market prior to kick off!

Spain are the most complete side left in the tournament and all the data supports this wholeheartedly.

They are undefeated through four games. They have not conceded one goal this entire World Cup; they are the only team left in the Round of 16 that has not conceded a goal. Their defensive xGA of 0.86 through four matches is the lowest in the entire tournament.

Spain has been a relentless force; they’ve posted a combined 78 shots, completely dominated possession in every fixture, and put on an absolute clinic in their 3-0 Round of 32 demolition over Austria (23-5 in shots, zero on-target attempts allowed) which was arguably one of the best knockout game performances this World Cup. Lamine Yamal continues to build on an incredible start as he becomes an even more significant force in this tournament and the last Round of 32 winner, Mikel Oyarzabal, is currently tied for the Golden Boot lead with four goals! And with the tandem of Pedri and Rodri in the midfield, Spain have arguably the best control of the center of the park left in the competition.

Portugal on the other hand has been an effective side without necessarily playing with flair this whole tournament.

They did win Group K but it was by no means dominant; a 0-0 draw against DR Congo, a 5-0 statement victory over Uzbekistan and another 0-0 draw against Colombia. They then required a Goncalo Ramos goal in the 94th minute to edge out Croatia in their Round of 32 opener! Cristiano Ronaldo also managed to score his first World Cup knockout stage goal in that fixture for the first time ever but the 41 year-old has clearly lost a step and his lack of speed is now a considerable disadvantage given Spain’s high defensive line which makes it impossible for him to play behind. The creativity on this Portugal side mostly rests on the shoulders of Bruno Fernandes (who still has yet to register a goal in the tournament) with João Neves and Vitinha giving them some engine in the middle.

History gives Portugal one bit of evidence of hope however.

They beat Spain in penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw in the Nations League final just over 13 months ago. Historically, Spain have had a propensity to draw their World Cup knockout games and four of their last seven in this stage have been ties. They are also on an undefeated run of nine consecutive international games.

The Prediction Market Clearly Favors Spain The prediction market is squarely in Spain’s corner. Spain are currently sitting at -115 to win in regulation, with a draw listed at +260 and Portugal at +310. The spread market via Kalshi currently has Spain at 51% likelihood to win with the draw at 27% and Portugal at 24%.

For the game to advance, Spain are -225 odds and Portugal at +180.

What Might Be the Most Underpriced Bet The most analytic play in this game could be under 2.5 goals, priced at -110. As I’ve already outlined, Spain’s defense is utterly phenomenal (0 goals conceded through 4 games). Portugal's defense has allowed only 0.7 goals per game through their last 10 internationals. Furthermore, AT&T Stadium is a climate-controlled environment with a stable 70 degrees, removing any environmental variables.

The last several Iberian Derbies have been tight-scoring affairs and this game could very well follow that trend.

The draw price at +260 certainly has value given Spain's knockout stage draw tendency and Portugal's incredible streak of form. The Catch however… Last time these two rivals met, they put a combined four goals in the net. Their 2018 World Cup clash saw a combined six goals!

Despite recent form, recent history indicates high-scoring games between Spain and Portugal. My Prediction I predict a 1-0 Spain victory. I expect Mikel Oyarzabal to score the lone goal and for Spain’s stout defense to completely stifle Ronaldo.

Portugal will likely need to rely on penalty kicks to advance and Spain’s organized defensive structure holds to carry their zero goals against record into the quarterfinals.

However, a last-minute equalizing goal by Ronaldo to force penalties and keep his fairy tale ending alive on a Monday afternoon in Dallas? That’s exactly the kind of magic this World Cup has served up. Who progresses to the quarterfinals-Spain's defensive perfection and Oyarzabal's Golden Boot quest, or Ronaldo's final heroic act? Tell me your prediction!
