In China, many businesses become one-shot deals not because people are inherently dishonest, but because trust is hard to build and the cost of breach of contract is too low. When the system cannot turn trust into an asset, people focus on gaming rather than cooperation, and on guarding themselves rather than creating value. Therefore, many times, on the surface, they are doing business, but in reality, they are engaging in a battle of wits. A truly mature business environment is not about tricks, but about long-term accumulated trust. Because once trust can compound, long-term cooperation will naturally eliminate short-term calculations.
