The Night I Learned Just How Important Account Security Really Is

Cryptocurrency trading isn't just about making profit. Sometimes the market teaches us valuable lessons in unexpected ways. One of these lessons came to me on December 19, 2025.

At approximately 01:17, I logged into my account from my computer and, while browsing posts and interacting with content, I was suddenly logged out of my Gate account. A message appeared on my computer screen saying, "You need to verify your account because you are a Google AI user," and simultaneously, I received a message from Gate on my phone containing a new password. At first, I thought it was a system error. I entered the password I received and tried to log in again.

However, I logged out again in the same way, the same message appeared on my computer, and another password notification arrived on my phone. In a moment of anger and absentmindedness, I entered the password I received on my phone and my fund password into the field indicated on the computer screen. After entering my passwords, I realized something was wrong this time. When I finally managed to access my account, I discovered that 59.5 GT tokens and approximately $130 worth of NUMI had been withdrawn without my permission.

Seeing my assets gone was both shocking and frustrating. More importantly, it made me realize just how crucial account security is in the crypto world. Even experienced users can fall victim to unauthorized access.

This incident taught me a few important lessons:

🔐 Always enable all available security features, including two-factor authentication (2FA).

Use authentication apps or hardware keys for stronger protection.

Suspicious Activity Alerts: Set up notifications for withdrawals and logins. Push alerts can help you act faster.

Cold Storage: Store your long-term assets in secure wallets outside of exchanges. Exchanges are convenient, but not perfect.

📱 Protect your phone number and email address, as these are often the first targets of attackers.
Password Hygiene: Never reuse your passwords across platforms. A password compromised elsewhere could lead to losses in your trading account.

⚠️ Phishing Awareness: Be wary of unexpected login prompts or password resets. Attackers often mimic legitimate processes.

📋 Regularly review your login history and withdrawal records.

💡 Never assume that security incidents only happen to others.

The Importance of Sharing

This incident reminded me that trading isn't just about charts and profits, it's about risk management. By sharing my story, I hope others will double-check their security measures before it's too late. The market rewards discipline but also punishes complacency.

Trading is a journey full of gains, losses, and lessons. Losing my GT and NUMI was painful, but it served as a warning. If my experience helps even one investor secure their account, this lesson is worth sharing.

While losing money is painful, this experience has made me much more aware of digital security. In the cryptocurrency world, protecting your assets is just as important as making profitable trades.

I hope my experience helps others avoid similar situations. Sometimes the biggest gains come not from profitable trades, but from the lessons we learn along the way.
A similar incident happened to me on another crypto exchange. The incident with my Gate account was entirely due to my carelessness and mistake, but in the other exchange's case, I wasn't at fault; even though I didn't enter my fund password, a very large amount of CHZ coins were withdrawn from my account. Despite repeatedly contacting them about the other exchange's incident, I received no clear response. They only said that someone had accessed my computer, which was offline and unconnected, and withdrawn the coins from there.

In my Gate account case, I contacted customer service directly, and they tried to recover the coins, but it didn't work. They explained what I needed to do and told me where the withdrawn coins were transferred. They said they would provide all necessary support if I pursued legal action.

The only thing I'll tell all my friends is that I no longer trust any exchange other than Gate. At Gate, customer service representatives and managers provide all kinds of support to help. They immediately secure your account. They won't open your account until you tell them it's secure.

Never forget that absentmindedness and impulsive behavior always cause harm. In such situations, remain calm, contact customer service immediately, and secure your account.
