Tactical Breakdown—Will Mexico Go on a Rampage or Control the Tempo Slowly?
Many fans might be thinking: since the host is facing a weaker opponent, they should definitely start by blasting them with an all-out assault, right? But Mexico’s head coach, Aguirre, has exactly the opposite tactical style—he’s a very pragmatic coach who doesn’t chase flashy football, only winning.
Mexico’s tactical core is controlling possession to sap the opponent’s energy. Their average possession rate is about 56%, and they rely on passing in the midfield and attacking third to break through defenses. In high-altitude regions, the advantage of a possession-based approach is amplified—having the opponent run after the ball is, in itself, a way to wear down their stamina. So Mexico won’t come out with full-throttle pressure right away. Instead, they first suppress South Africa with tempo, and only then increase the pace in the second half.
As for South Africa, Bross is an old-school pragmatic manager, and he will most likely field a five-defender formation with everyone dropping deep to retreat across the back. Their strategy is very clear: hold tight in the first half, protect a 0-0 scoreline, and then reassess in the second half. If they can keep it together in the first half, the confidence of South Africa’s players will grow more and more, and Mexico may become impatient—this is when South Africa will have an opportunity to steal a counterattack.
But the question is whether South Africa’s five-defender setup can last for more than 70 minutes. Based on the teams’ warm-up match data, Mexico’s attacking efficiency is about 1 goal per 9.5 shots. It’s very questionable how long South Africa’s defense can hold up in a high-altitude environment. Once Mexico takes the lead in stoppage time in the first half or at the start of the second half, South Africa’s tactics will completely fall apart—they’ll have to push forward to attack, but pushing forward will give Mexico more counterattack space. So I think the timing of Mexico’s first goal is extremely important—it will directly determine whether the final score is 2-0 or 3-1.
