Mexico’s fast wide runners—Rosano and Viga—can South Africa’s full-backs hold up?
Mexico’s attack isn’t just about the two forwards, Giménez. Their wide lanes are also a lethal weapon. On the left wing, Rosano, and on the right wing, Viga, are both wide players with blistering speed and strong breakthrough ability. Most of South Africa’s full-backs come from domestic leagues, and facing wing attacks at this level, they will likely find it extremely difficult.
Rosano plays for PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie. Although he isn’t one of Europe’s top-tier giants, he’s known for his quickness and excellent dribbling. He has made more than seventy appearances for the Mexico national team, so he’s well experienced. Viga is younger and more explosive, and he plays in the Mexican league—he’s very well adapted to high-altitude home grounds. These two take turns attacking South Africa’s flanks; even if South Africa’s full-backs can match them once or twice, they’re still bound to be beaten.
Once Rosano or Viga successfully drives past the byline, their crossing quality is also good. Raúl Giménez is waiting inside the box to pounce on chances, which puts enormous pressure on South Africa’s center-backs. If the cross is cleared, Mexico’s full-backs or midfielders can still step in and shoot from distance, making South Africa’s defense very passive.
South Africa’s only way to respond is to compress their defensive line—have the wide forwards also drop back to provide cover, and use multiple players to double up and limit Mexico’s wing breakthroughs. But doing that sacrifices numbers for the counterattack, leaving Foster more isolated and without support up front. That’s the dilemma weak teams face when playing against strong teams.
I predict Mexico will score at least one goal from a cross or a shot after an inside cut from the wing. Rosano or Viga is very likely to contribute an assist or a goal. In the betting market, you can consider backing “Rosano to score or assist,” or “Mexico to score via wing attack.” These more specific options typically have higher odds than simply betting on the result, so it’s worth a try.
