Anthropic Explores a Rare Leadership Model: Siblings Co-Govern, While the CEO Oversees Just One Person

Golden Finance reports that on June 11th, according to Bloomberg, Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei has only one direct subordinate in this artificial intelligence company. This is quite rare in the tech industry, as many leaders are reducing management layers and expanding management scope. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has about six direct reports, while NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has stated that 60 people report to him.
Anthropic is trying a different leadership model: the CEO spends almost all of his time on macro-level conversations, organizational culture building, and providing input on research directions and strategies, rather than managing senior staff. The company's executive team reports instead to Dario's sister, Anthropic President Daniela Amodei, who handles most of the company's daily operations and reports to the Anthropic board. The only person Dario directly manages is his chief of staff, Avital Balwit.
"This incredibly frees up my hands," Dario said in an interview with Bloomberg's The Circuit, "It allows me to do everything I do more easily."
For Dario, who is starting his first venture, holds a Ph.D. in biophysics from Princeton University, and began his career as a researcher in a lab, this usually means delving into artificial intelligence and its significance for humanity—whether in company-wide "vision exploration" (where he reflects broadly on various topics at employee meetings) or in lengthy public articles. Dario estimates that he spends "probably half" of his time discussing "Anthropic's culture and how this culture operates" with employees, and he says maintaining the company culture may be the "most important top priority" for him and Daniela.
Anthropic's latest funding round valued the company close to $1 trillion, and it is rushing to go public before OpenAI. Dario was previously Vice President of Research at OpenAI but left due to disagreements with the leadership team, and founded Anthropic in 2021. Daniela has more extensive experience in personnel management at tech startups, whether during her early tenure at Stripe or leading the safety and policy team at OpenAI.
