Just managing a subordinate, Anthropic's CEO spends half of his energy on company culture development

Abstract generation in progress

According to Beating Monitoring, Anthropic is implementing an extremely flat management structure, with CEO Dario Amodei personally overseeing only the chief of staff. This stands in sharp contrast to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s model, in which Altman has about 6 direct reports, with up to 60 people reporting directly to Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.

The executive team collectively reports to President Daniela Amodei (Dario Amodei’s sister). She is responsible for day-to-day operations and reports to the board. With management time freed up, Dario Amodei focuses on research direction and spends about half of his time communicating company culture with employees. In the face of rapid expansion and the influx of large numbers of external employees, he is determined to prevent his teams from simply copying their former employer’s work habits. He personally chairs employee meetings known as “vision quests” and writes long-form philosophical essays.

To support the company’s business expansion, it has brought in external executives such as Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao and Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith in 2024 and 2025. Even as the executive leadership layer begins introducing professional managers, all seven of the co-founders from the company’s early days remain in their roles to this day.
