A 19-year-old Canadian teenager made over $13 million through crypto scams, and his reckless driving arrest exposes the full case. BlockBeats news, June 11, according to The New York Times report, Canadian national Trenton Johnston pleaded guilty in the U.S. Federal Court in Florida, admitting to conspiracy to money laundering involving approximately $13 million, with funds sourced from cryptocurrency scams. Prosecutor documents show that Johnston, over two years, impersonated representatives of Google and crypto companies to trick victims into surrendering account access, then conspired with accomplices to transfer and hide the illegal proceeds, used for luxury consumption including luxury cars, jewelry, nightclub outings, and private jet travel.
Next, three things need to be monitored: whether the related funds continue to flow in, whether on-chain transaction volume and holdings keep expanding, and whether project parties or regulators provide new confirmation information. A single news flash can only indicate that sentiment has been ignited; subsequent data will determine if it can settle into a trend.
Risks should also be on the table: In March 2024, he was stopped by police in Miami for speeding in a Rolls-Royce, with suspected marijuana odor and illegal drugs inside, prompting further investigation, which uncovered his long-term involvement in crypto scams. The case also revealed that he had scammed a California resident out of about 185 Bitcoin (worth approximately $13 million) through social engineering methods.
