Bitcoin L2 protocol Botanix announced on June 10 that it will shut down the network, officially bringing nearly four years of operations to an end. The team urges users to complete asset withdrawals by July 9, 2026. Any remaining BTC and other crypto assets after the deadline will be cleared.

Weak Demand for Native BTC DeFi

In a community announcement, the Botanix team said that demand for native BTC DeFi has remained weak, and fee revenue is no longer enough to sustain the network’s economic operations.

When Botanix officially launched its mainnet in July 2025, it compressed block time to 5 seconds and set up an initial federation that included multiple major crypto players. At the time, it was expected that federation nodes would exceed 100 in 2026. Now, less than a year later, the project has announced shutting down, highlighting how fierce competition is in the Bitcoin L2 space.

Dongqu previously reported that the survival rate in the Bitcoin L2 space is below 20%, and most projects face the dilemma of “getting traffic but no profits.” Botanix’s network shutdown is one of the signals that the sector is consolidating.

Withdrawal Schedule and Precautions

Users must complete the following actions before the specified times:

  • Final deadline: July 9, 2026 (inclusive)
  • Assets eligible for withdrawal: BTC and other crypto assets
  • Consequences after the deadline: Remaining assets will be cleared and cannot be claimed

As of now, Botanix has not explained whether withdrawals involve any additional gas fees or on-chain restrictions. Users holding Botanix assets are advised to take action as soon as possible to avoid network congestion right at the last minute.

Hidden Risks in the Bitcoin L2 Track

Botanix is one of the early Bitcoin L2 protocols that operates in an EVM-compatible manner. The shutdown signal suggests that Bitcoin L2’s “first-mover advantage” does not necessarily mean the protocol can retain users long term. As competitors such as Stacks and BOB continue to expand, the pressure of traffic being diverted away from BTC DeFi will become even more obvious.

Dongqu previously analyzed that Bitcoin L2 has three key distinguishing criteria: on-chain activity, the developer ecosystem, and the economic model. Botanix’s shutdown serves as a reminder to investors that Bitcoin L2’s moat still needs to be validated through practical results.
