Anthropic releases the Mythos model Fable 5, sparking concerns about accelerated exposure of smart contract and DeFi vulnerabilities

Abstract generation in progress
Wu Shuo learned that artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced early this morning the launch of its first Mythos-level AI model, Claude Fable 5, made available to the public. In multiple benchmark tests, including software engineering and scientific research, it has outperformed competing models of similar caliber. Anthropic previously expressed concerns about the destructive potential of models at this level (it once wrote a Windows kernel exploit within 31 minutes). Fable 5 introduces an automatic traffic-diversion safety mechanism: when the system encounters high-risk queries such as network attacks, biological, chemical, or model distillation, it automatically redirects requests to an older model with lower reasoning capability, Claude Opus 4.8 (which previously helped discover a major covert vulnerability in Zcash Orchard). This has sparked market worries that frontier AI models may accelerate the exposure or creation of privacy coins, smart contracts, and DeFi vulnerabilities—benefiting AI audits but posing a serious challenge for unaudited code.

The automatic load balancing design is quite interesting, but what if an attacker figures out the rules? Wouldn't that become a roadmap for targeted downgrade attacks?

The name Fable 5 is well-chosen; a mythic-level model telling a safety fable — when at your strongest, you should learn to intentionally become weaker, which is a bit ironic.

Mythos Level has finally been released, and the performance is indeed top-notch. However, when it comes to privacy, who will define the boundary between audited and unaudited code? It feels like we’re going to argue about this for another six months.
