Vitalik Buterin: Some L2 projects are not fully decentralized

ME News, on May 16 (UTC+8), 2025—Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said during his EthCC speech on July 3, 2025 that many Layer 2 projects claiming to be built on-chain have backdoors that can be triggered at any time or lack sufficient decentralization. He believes that the architecture of these projects is hardly different from traditional centralized servers. He noted that if developers cannot ensure the project is thoroughly decentralized, it may be more practical to directly use centralized servers. (Source: MLion)

Backdoor issues are more frightening than centralization, as they can freeze funds at any time.

Directly relying on centralized servers is actually more honest, this irony is full blast.

Vitalik's words are harsh, but they do hit many of the pain points of L2.
