🇰🇵 An American developer gave a Bitcoin conference in North Korea… before being arrested by the FBI 😳

In 2019, Virgil Griffith traveled to Pyongyang to participate in a cryptocurrency conference organized in North Korea.
During the event, he demonstrated how Bitcoin and blockchain technologies work in front of an audience including North Korean officials.
But U.S. authorities quickly considered that this intervention could help North Korea bypass certain international economic sanctions through cryptocurrencies.
Upon returning to the United States, Griffith was arrested by the FBI and then prosecuted for violating international sanctions laws.
Virgil Griffith was not an unknown figure. A former researcher associated with Ethereum, he was regarded as an extremely intelligent and respected profile in the tech community.
In 2022, Virgil Griffith ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to more than five years in prison.
But after several requests for sentence reduction, he was eventually released early under certain conditions in 2024.
