Vitalik: The worst-case scenario for making the company more "idealistic" is a slowdown in development, and the best-case scenario is gaining community support.

ME News Message, May 25 (UTC+8): Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin tweeted that if a company becomes more “dogmatic” in order to stick to its principles (such as giving Richard Stallman veto power over Google), the worst outcome is that the company’s development slows down, but other companies will still keep pushing technological progress. For sensitive areas such as AGI and military technology, such a slowdown may historically have been a bad thing, but in the current context it may be acceptable—perhaps even beneficial. And the best outcome would be that a company that truly aligns deeply with community values can gain the community’s spontaneous support, talent, and marketing resources—support that money alone cannot easily buy. He believes that some AI companies had previously tried to achieve similar effects through effective altruism, but because consequentialism is easy to be corrupted, the final results have been limited. Richard Stallman's metaphor of having veto power over Google is a bit exaggerated, but it indeed highlights the core contradiction.

Vitalik, this perspective is quite interesting, applying the logic of open-source communities to AI companies, but can AGI really slow down the pace?

From Ethereum's governance experiments to the organizational structure of AI companies, Vitalik has been consistently trying to extrapolate decentralized experiences. Success or failure is another matter, but the approach has been quite consistent.

Wait, he said that the slowdown in military technology might be a bad thing in the course of history? The context switch is a bit fast—need to think it over a bit more.

The effective altruism approach has indeed hit a wall in the AI field. Now let's try a different narrative—community binding, which makes logical sense.

Dogmatism vs community-driven, the key is whether this company is truly listening to the community or just using values as PR.
