Vitalik responds to Ethereum state storage controversy: Off-chain hash storage solution still faces fundamental challenges
ME News Update, May 18 (UTC+8), Vitalik Buterin responded on the X platform to community proposals regarding Ethereum state storage optimization solutions. He stated that although the “user self-stores data, with only hashes and proofs stored on-chain” approach can optimize storage, it still requires saving and updating necessary data, resulting in similar outcomes to current state storage and not significantly reducing the burden. Vitalik believes that while there are potential solutions, they all involve complex steps and various trade-offs. The background discussion stems from the EIP-8037 proposal, which suggests limiting state growth by increasing the initial gas costs for new contracts, accounts, and storage slots, but does not fundamentally solve the problem. Currently, the community is still discussing alternative solutions including cryptographic sharding, off-chain stateless contracts, and periodic blockchain pruning, but no consensus has been reached.
