Ethereum Foundation core member Josh Stark is leaving, having led major upgrades such as The Merge.
ME News message, on April 16 (UTC+8), Ethereum Foundation (EF) core figure Josh Stark announced that he is stepping down. After serving for five years, he will officially resign at the end of the month.
Stark joined the Ethereum Foundation in 2019. He initially worked in the Special Projects team, before later being promoted to a leadership role. He has worked with senior figures such as EF Chair Aya Miyaguchi, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, and co-executive directors Hsiao-Wei Wang and Bastian Aue. He is one of the most recognizable members of the Foundation in terms of its public-facing presence. He has led multiple major Ethereum developments, including the “The Merge” upgrade that transitioned from proof of work to proof of stake, as well as subsequent upgrades such as Dencun, Fusaka, and Pectra.
During last year’s leadership reshuffle at the Foundation, he was appointed as a “co-managing” person of the EF Board of Directors, and more recently took office as co-chair of the “Trillion-Dollar Security” initiative. Last month, Stark co-authored an Ethereum strategy blog post with Josh Rudolf and Julian Ma, outlining Ethereum’s latest scaling directions and how they relate to the Layer 2 ecosystem.
Stark said, “I haven’t planned my future yet. I just want to rest well and spend time with my family and friends.”
This resignation occurs amid the Ethereum Foundation’s ongoing transformation. Last year, the Foundation underwent major leadership adjustments, after which it refocused its strategic priorities on Ethereum mainnet scaling and core cypherpunk values. Tomasz K. Stańczak also stepped down from his co-executive director role at the end of February this year, having served for less than a year. On the same day, Trent Van Epps also announced that he was leaving the EF to devote himself full-time to Protocol Guild, the independent funding organization for core Ethereum developers that he founded.
