I just learned about Nicolas Kokkalis and am truly impressed with his journey in the blockchain field. He is a quite interesting figure that many of you might not know well.
Niolas Kokkalis was born in 1984 in Athens, Greece, with a very solid educational background. He graduated in Computer Science from the University of Athens in 2006, then continued studying at Stanford and earned a Master's degree in 2008. Notably, during his Ph.D. studies at Stanford (completed in 2012), Nicolas Kokkalis focused on distributed systems and even developed a framework for smart contract programming—an innovative idea that later became the foundation for Ethereum.
But he's not just theoretical; he's also a true entrepreneur. At Stanford, Nicolas Kokkalis co-founded StartX in 2011—a non-profit startup incubator now valued at over $26 billion. He served as the Chief Technology Officer there until 2018, supporting many tech projects.
However, the project he's most famous for is Pi Network, launched on March 14, 2019 (Pi Day). Along with co-founders Chengdiao Fan and Vincent McPhillip, Nicolas Kokkalis created a decentralized cryptocurrency that can be mined on mobile devices. This idea is quite unique—democratizing access to digital currency by allowing everyone to participate from their mobile devices. The network has grown to millions of users worldwide.
Additionally, Nicolas Kokkalis is also a thinker in blockchain. He taught the first course on decentralized applications (CS359B) at Stanford in 2018 as an adjunct professor. His achievements include being listed in Forbes' 30 Under 30 (2020) and being a member of the World Economic Forum Expert Network.
What I find fascinating about Nicolas Kokkalis is the combination of academic rigor and entrepreneurial ambition. He not only researches theoretically but also actively builds impactful projects. Pi Network is now approaching significant milestones, and if successful, this project could cement Nicolas Kokkalis's position as a transformative figure in the cryptocurrency world.
