S&P 500 Surpasses 7,000, Treasury Makes Historic Buyback
US stocks erased losses and hit new records following news of a ceasefire in the Middle East. The S&P 500 surged to 7,022 points, reaching its first peak since January, while the Nasdaq closed at its highest level since October.
This is a complete V-turn, coming just weeks after a sell-off stemming from Iran. The index had fallen 9% from its January peak but has recovered 7.6% from its March 31 low.
Two catalysts fueling the rally:
1. Easing of geopolitical risk premium — the ceasefire eased energy supply concerns
2. Liquidity injection — the US Treasury withdrew $15 billion in bonds from the market in the largest buyback operation in its history
Technically, this triggered one of the fastest short-covering waves in the last decade. Hedge funds closing their ETF short positions accelerated the rally.
The takeaway for crypto is clear: a risk-on reversal in equities is creating a beta effect in Bitcoin. Historically, a V-recovery of this magnitude in the S&P 500 precedes a crypto rally by 2-4 weeks. Increased liquidity and short squeeze support altcoin rotation.
Note: This is not investment advice. Data is based on closing prices of April 15-16, 2026. DYOR.
