BTC at $82,200—dare to bet on the FOMC?
CPI comes in scorching, ETFs see outflows, and rate-hike clouds loom—but BTC is holding firm at $80,000. On the eve of the FOMC, is the long position in your hands brave or foolish?
First, the surface picture: bad news is hammering the market, but the price isn’t collapsing.
September CPI rose 3.7% year over year, higher than expected, and gasoline jumped 9.1% in a month. After the data came out, BTC plunged straight to $80,000, and everyone thought it was going to collapse. But what happened? It held. A few Fed officials came out and said, “No rush,” the 10-year Treasury yield fell back from 5.3%, and BTC bounced from $79,700 to $82,200.
The price is now stuck at $82,200, unable to move higher or lower. 24-hour trading volume hasn’t picked up, ETFs have seen net outflows this month, and institutions are avoiding risk. But long-term holders haven’t moved, and the post-halving supply-tightening thesis remains intact. With a market cap of $1.65 trillion and BTC 35% below its ATH of $126,000, this isn’t a bear market—it’s the most grueling kind of mid-bull-market chop.
First: CPI came in hotter than expected, but BTC didn’t collapse. What does that tell us?
It means the bears don’t dare bet big, and the bulls don’t dare chase higher. Everyone is waiting for the October 27-28 FOMC meeting.
You think you’re waiting for direction?
Actually, direction is waiting for you to capitulate.
CPI-related bad news sent BTC down to $80,000, but it held. ETF outflows, but it held. Rising rate-hike odds, and still it held.
What does support look like? This is it. $80,000 has become the psychological red line for both bulls and bears. If it breaks, panic selling will pour in; if it holds, the bears will have to cover.
Second: ETF outflows—are institutions running? Don’t panic.
Spot ETFs have indeed seen net outflows this month, and outflows were even larger on CPI day. But look at who’s selling—it’s short-term allocation money seeking safety, not long-term holders.
On-chain data is clear: long-term holders are broadly steady, and new coin supply continues to tighten after the halving.
Institutions participate deeply through ETFs, so short-term entries and exits are normal. They’re leaving because of macro uncertainty; they’ll come back when the macro outlook turns.
If you capitulate along with ETF outflows, what will you have left to buy with when they return?
Third: The technical picture is just a range. Don’t scare yourself.
Support: $80,000-$79,700 (recent low + psychological level); if it breaks, watch $78,000-$76,000.
Resistance: $82,500-$83,000 (short term), $84,000 (failed to break through three times this month), $86,000-$87,500 (strong supply zone).
Pattern: $80k-$84k range-bound trading, neutral RSI, no pickup in volume—“support, but no breakout.”
In a word: until there’s a high-volume breakout above $84,000, every rise is a bounce, not a reversal.
Bulls versus bears—see for yourself
On one side:
Sticky inflation, with rate-hike expectations still in play
ETF net outflows, and institutions avoiding risk in the short term
10-year Treasury yields above 5%, putting pressure on zero-yield assets
Uncertainty before the FOMC, with no one daring to take a big position
On the other:
Post-halving supply tightening; the long-term thesis is unchanged
Long-term holders are steady, with no panic selling
Fed officials are starting to cool things down, and rate-hike odds have fallen to 30%
$80,000 support has held three times, and bearish momentum is fading
Trading strategy
Short term:
Scale in on dips at $80,000-$80,500, with a stop at $79,700. Target $82,500-$84,000, then trim.
If BTC breaks above $84,000 on strong volume and holds, you can go long, targeting $86,000-$87,500.
Don’t chase a long at $82,200—that’s short-term resistance; one pullback after you enter and you’ll panic.
Medium term:
Before the FOMC, keep your position below 50%.
Dovish (no hike/pause) → test $84,000-$87,000; buy.
Hawkish (hike/hint at further tightening) → test $80,000, possibly even $78,000; wait to buy lower.
BTC right now is just like October 2023—
Everyone is waiting for the FOMC, and everyone is complaining about “garbage price action.” And then?
By the time the news breaks, the train has already left the station.
The FOMC isn’t there to show you the way—it’s there to bury you.
If you wait for clarity before getting on board, you’ll always buy at the top.
The market is best at rallying when you’re desperate and dumping when you’re excited.
$80,000 isn’t the bottom; it’s your psychological line of defense. If it breaks, that’s when you’ll truly panic.
