The old “buy BTC in wartime” playbook was sunk today by mines from oil tankers
Seven ships were attacked or struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz in one day, and Brent crude surged past $113. The U.S. and Israel have reportedly drawn up detailed plans to strike Iran again after the midterm elections.
By the old playbook, this is when you should add to your BTC position and wait for “safe-haven money” to lift it.
So what happened?
BTC fell below $82,000, 100,000 traders were liquidated, $441 million was wiped out, and long positions accounted for 90%.
Gold is also falling. Spot gold broke below $4,000, down more than 4% so far this week.
Two “safe-haven assets,” hand in hand, jumping downward.
Let’s break down the logic: Why is the old playbook dead?
The old playbook’s chain: war → panic → buy gold/BTC.
The new playbook’s chain: war → oil prices surge → inflation expectations explode → rate hikes clamp down hard on everything that yields nothing.
What does Brent at $113 mean? Every step higher in oil prices stokes inflation expectations further. CME data shows the probability of a cumulative 25-basis-point rate hike by December has hit 74.8%.
Why doesn’t gold yield anything? Because the higher interest rates climb, the greater the opportunity cost of holding it. BTC is the same. When “money getting more expensive” becomes the market’s only dominant theme, the safe-haven narrative doesn’t stand a chance against the rate-hike narrative.
So what exactly is BTC now?
In this pricing framework, it isn’t “digital gold.”
It’s a high-beta risk asset, sailing in the same boat as Nasdaq tech stocks.
On October 22, Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.7%, Tesla fell 5% in premarket trading, and semiconductor stocks broadly declined. BTC tracked them more closely than anything else. One analysis put the number squarely at 0.96: BTC’s correlation with the Nasdaq, its highest in recent months.
What does 0.96 mean? The Nasdaq sneezes, and BTC goes straight to the ICU.
You’re holding an asset that breathes in sync with tech stocks, expecting it to play gold’s role in a war. This isn’t a cognitive bias; it’s a cognitive catastrophe.
Here’s the most painful part:
Iran is laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz to pressure the United States. Oil prices are pushed higher, inflation expectations are ignited, the probability of rate hikes rises, and what ultimately gets blown up is your BTC long position.
Your position has become the cheapest piece on the geopolitical chessboard.
The war hasn’t fully broken out yet, but your account has already been blown through.
When war becomes an assist for rate hikes, BTC bulls become hostages in the geopolitical game.
The old playbook can go up in flames. The first page of the new one says just one thing: Before you understand interest rates, don’t deceive yourself with the words “safe haven.”
