ZEC is at $970—are you chasing it?
Up 20x, surging to a new high of 979.76, with a market cap of $16 billion, and just turned by Grayscale into the first privacy coin ETF in the US—but just now, the price is stuck at 970, the daily RSI has soared to 78 and is overbought, perpetual funding rates remain high, and bulls and bears have been deadlocked at the 980 mark for two hours. Will this burst of momentum continue to blast past 1000, or will it hit the brakes and pull back to 900 first?
First: The ETF is here, but the good news has already been priced in from 800 to 980
Grayscale converted the Zcash Trust into the US’s first spot ZEC ETF (ZCSH), which launched on August 25. The regulated entry point is now open, and Grayscale’s research report positions ZEC as “financial privacy in the age of AI surveillance,” even discussing whether it can carve out a share of BTC’s market.
Retail traders always think they should buy after the good news is released, but institutions are always selling to you after the good news comes out.
Second: Ironwood fixed the vulnerability, but “trust recovery” is a slow process
Ironwood went live on July 28. The old pool was sealed, funds were migrated to a new shielded pool, and the verifiability of the supply was restored.
That vulnerability in June made many people question Zcash’s “mathematical security” overnight. Although the team proved that it could fix the issue, the “trust deficit” will not fully recover after a single upgrade. This is also why ZEC did not surge above 1000 after the ETF launch—the market is still waiting for more confirmation signals.
Third: While you are watching the candlesticks, the whales are watching September 14
The NU7 holders’ vote closes on September 14. Topics include issuance smoothing, whether to retain the halving schedule, and block time adjustments. This will not immediately change the consensus, but it is a watershed moment for the long-term narrative.
More importantly, Cypherpunk, a Nasdaq-listed company, continues to accumulate coins, targeting approximately 5% of the total supply, and has also bought mining capacity. While you are hesitating at 970 over whether to chase, they bought all the way up from 400, 500, and 600, and are now holding their core position while waiting for the voting results.
What is the chart telling you?
Daily RSI: 73–78, overbought. An upper wick/high-level consolidation after consecutive large bullish candles is a typical sign of profit-taking. The price is far above EMA20 (750) and EMA50 (640), with an excessive deviation.
979.76 is today’s high, and 933 is the low—you are right in the middle at 970, neither here nor there.
Support: 930–940 (today’s low), 800–850 (the pre-breakout range, a healthy pullback zone)
Resistance: 975–980 (short-term ATH), 1000 (the psychological round-number level)
On the 4-hour timeframe, the price is already meeting resistance near the upper edge of the ascending channel. When perpetual funding rates and OI are high, a push to 980 can easily turn into a long squeeze.
In one sentence: bullish on the weekly chart, overbought on the daily chart, and in a distribution zone on the hourly chart. This is not a positioning zone like 400–600; it is a 900+ risk-management zone.
How to play it?
For those already holding long positions:
Reduce your position by 30%–50% at 970–980 to lock in profits. Move the stop-loss on the remainder up to 930; if it breaks below that, watch 850.
For those with no position who want to go long:
Don’t chase. Wait for an aggressive pullback to 900–930, with a stop-loss at 880 and a target of retesting 980–1000. Alternatively, wait for a healthy pullback to 800–850 on declining volume, with a stop-loss at 760 and targets of 1000/1150.
For those looking to bet on a short:
Watch for two failed pushes toward 975–1000, featuring long upper wicks and rising volume without further gains. Short with a small position, targeting 930 first and 850 second. If it holds above 1000, stop out immediately and admit the mistake.
Zcash has risen from the tens to nearly 1000, and after a 20x move, you are still asking, “Can I still buy?”—which means you missed the best entry and now want to use courage to make up for laziness.
ZEC at 970 is not incapable of rising, but the risk-reward ratio has already changed. At this level, discipline matters more than direction, and staying in the game matters more than making money quickly.
Are you now fully invested waiting for 1000, or reducing your position and waiting for a pullback?
