From $16 to $1,200, ZEC Is Eating BTC’s “Store-of-Value Narrative”
At its 2024 low, ZEC was around $16.
On September 8, 2026, ZEC touched $1,256 intraday, with its market cap briefly reaching $21.11 billion.
A gain of more than 7,700%.
Up 45% in one week and 138% in 30 days.
It successively surpassed DOGE and HYPE, briefly entering the top nine crypto assets by market cap.
This is not an ordinary rebound.
This is a repricing of an asset class.
When ZEC was born nine years ago, expectations were that it would be “Bitcoin’s privacy version.”
The result? Nine years of stagnation, consistently underperforming Bitcoin and major crypto assets. The market boxed it into the label of an “anonymous transfer tool,” keeping its valuation firmly depressed.
Nine years later, ZEC is finally benchmarking itself not against BTC’s technology, but against BTC’s narrative.
Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, proposed a framework: Zcash is shifting from a “privacy coin” to a “privacy-oriented store-of-value asset.”
What does Bitcoin provide? Publicly auditable scarcity, decentralization, and transparent supply.
What is Zcash doing? Adding optional privacy on top of similar monetary properties.
Put simply:
Bitcoin is a “transparent vault,” while Zcash is an “invisible vault.”
Why now? Three differentiated advantages are exploding simultaneously.
First, financial privacy—the “invisibility cloak” of the AI era.
Grayscale’s report highlighted a fatal trend: AI is making it easier to link transaction records on public blockchains to real-world identities. The cost of on-chain monitoring is falling off a cliff, while accuracy is rising exponentially.
You think you’re anonymous? AI can link your wallet to your identity in minutes.
Zcash’s shielded pool—which uses zero-knowledge proofs to hide the sender, recipient, and amount—is shifting from a “niche feature” to a “necessity.” As of May, around 30% of the ZEC supply was held in shielded pools, far above the roughly 8% level in its early years.
Second, resistance to quantum threats.
The development team continues to monitor the potential risks quantum computing poses to traditional cryptography. The Ironwood upgrade has already adopted formally verified pools and recoverable quantum notes. This is not marketing; it is forward-looking defense.
Third, Intents technology.
Users or AI agents can use Zcash as a private asset hub. Grayscale’s report explicitly stated: “For privacy-conscious users, this could become a ‘must-have’ feature.”
But the most powerful factor is that Zcash is forming a “reflexive flywheel.”
What is reflexivity? Price rises → the dollar value of the shielded pool increases → the privacy set expands → the usability of large capital improves → adoption increases → the store-of-value narrative strengthens → more capital enters.
Traditional protocol tokens are constrained by revenue, buybacks, and valuation multiples. The higher the price, the smaller the potential return.
Store-of-value assets do not have this ceiling.
Their potential market depends on how much wealth investors are willing to put into them.
Grayscale’s scenario model shows that if Zcash captures a 5% market share in the privacy store-of-value sector, its valuation could grow ninefold. If it reaches 5% to 15% of Bitcoin’s market cap, ZEC’s price upside would far exceed current levels.
ZEC’s current market cap is still less than 1% of Bitcoin’s.
The ETF is that “compliant capital gateway.”
On August 25, Grayscale’s Zcash ETF (ZCSH) began trading on NYSE Arca. It is the first spot ETF tracking a privacy coin in the history of the U.S. market.
In less than two weeks after launch, net assets under management had reached $463 million. Cumulative net inflows exceeded $34 million.
Traditional institutions do not need to touch an exchange or manage self-custody wallets—a single brokerage account provides ZEC exposure.
The ETF’s listing itself does not mean demand has already formed. But $463 million in real money is already there.
Just two months ago, ZEC experienced a “trust crisis.”
In June, a potential critical vulnerability was exposed in the Orchard shielded pool. ZEC plunged more than 60% from $650, briefly falling below $300.
Trust in the “invisible vault” nearly collapsed.
Then what happened?
In July, the Ironwood upgrade was deployed, permanently closing the old Orchard pool and launching the new Ironwood pool. The vulnerability was fixed. Network integrity was restored.
The price climbed from below $300 to above $1,200.
This is not “new growth.” It is the dual effect of “trust restoration plus valuation re-rating.”
A system that undergoes a shock, recovers, and then becomes stronger—that is antifragility.
How many times did Bitcoin “die” in its early years? It never actually died, and instead grew stronger each time.
Zcash is following the same path.
The crypto market is shifting from “broad-based gains” to “structural divergence.”
On one side are store-of-value assets—Bitcoin and ZEC. On the other are VC tokens and meme coins lacking real demand, which continue to face unlocking and selling pressure.
Money is flowing toward “hard assets.”
This ZEC rally is not speculation; it is a repricing.
From an “anonymous transfer tool” to a “privacy-oriented store-of-value asset”—this narrative shift is worth trillions of dollars.
The risks must also be acknowledged.
ZEC is far behind Bitcoin in store-of-value consensus, liquidity, and institutional holdings.
Wang Chun, co-founder of F2Pool, posted today that ZEC’s recent rise is mainly “narrative-driven,” with fundamentals far weaker than SOL and HYPE.
Is he right? Partially. But “narrative-driven” is itself the core driver of store-of-value assets. Bitcoin’s store-of-value consensus also began as a “narrative.”
The real question is: Can this narrative continue to be validated?
Will the amount of ZEC in shielded pools continue to grow? Will ETF funds continue flowing in? Will protocol upgrades maintain trust?
If yes, ZEC is the next BTC-level opportunity. If not, reflexivity will run in reverse.
Nine years ago, when ZEC was born, it benchmarked itself against BTC’s technology.
Nine years later, it is finally benchmarking itself against BTC’s narrative.
And the market is voting with a price of $1,200.
