U.S. July nonfarm payrolls came in, clearly below expectations, while the previous two months were revised sharply lower.
Employment fell by 23k, whereas the market had expected an increase of about 83k.
The market also quickly shifted into “bad news is good news” mode:
•S&P 500 up about 0.6%
•Nasdaq up about 1.3%
•2-year U.S. Treasury yield fell back to about 4.20%
For tech stocks, U.S. Treasuries, and gold, easing interest-rate pressure is relatively positive; but for banks, retail, industrials, and cyclical stocks, slowing employment and income are not good news.
