The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3 percent from 4.2 percent. Average hourly earnings were 0.2 percent month over month and 3.6 percent year over year.
Markets read this as clear evidence that the labor market is cooling faster than the Fed thought. Within minutes of the release, the probability of a September rate cut jumped from 68 percent to 91 percent.
