Usually, when fear spreads, people run toward gold.
This time it went the other way. On Friday gold fell to its lowest level in a year, around $3,870. A month ago it was $4,218.
That same day, $GVZ , the market's fear gauge for gold, jumped 15% in a single day, from 22.73 to 26.15. This number doesn't say which way gold will go. It only says the expectation of big swings has risen.
My read is that this fear is not about missing out on gold. It's about losing it. If people expect interest rates to rise, gold, which pays no interest, becomes less attractive. Even on election day gold didn't rise
