CFTC proposes split between prediction contracts and sportsbook bets
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission took two steps on Oct. 9 to clarify where prediction markets end and gambling begins under federal law.
First, the CFTC proposed expanding the definition of a swap to explicitly include contracts on sports and other events, such as politics, cultural happenings, and weather outcomes. CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig stated these products fall squarely within the agency’s exclusive jurisdiction under the Commodity Exchange Act.

Starting October 1, Russia’s Ministry of Finance began paying some employees in Digital Rubles. Participation is currently entirely voluntary.
📌 Key points:
• Since September 1, major banks and commercial businesses in Russia have deployed transaction infrastructure.
• By the end of September, around 200,000 Russians had opened digital ruble accounts.
• The currency is used to transfer money and pay for goods and services, but balances do not earn interest.
This is a new step in Russia’s plan to integrate CBDCs into its economic life.
