Before adding to a position, move the stop-loss up first.
The Way of Trading discusses two types of pyramiding. In the trend-following approach, add to the position in several steps once the trend is moving in the right direction, moving the stop-loss up each time. In the book’s illustration, after the second addition, even if the price returns to the stop-loss line, one position gains and the other loses, leaving you exactly breakeven.
