Maintaining DA legitimacy?Delve into the reasons behind Vitalik's open card shouting ENS
Many people think that the layer2 data parsing solution of @VitalikButerin forwarding ENS is a new grand narrative for ENS, but this is not necessarily the case. If you carefully analyze the layer2 integration gameplay provided by @ensdomains, you can understand Vitalik’s intention: to further shrink Ethereum’s DA control over layer2. Next, let me briefly analyze:
ENS The domain name service will define a set of interaction logic, and users only need to enter a short domain name to automatically connect to the corresponding associated long Address ENSSmart Contract, which solves the pain point of EOA Address complex, difficult to remember and difficult to identify. It should be said that this set of domain name services of ENS is more aimed at the future expansion market with larger user traffic, especially some Mass Option user groups. Layer 2 is the future that Ethereum expand and absorb large traffic, and if the ENS domain name resolution solution cannot cover Layer 2 and only stays at the EthereumMainnet level, it is difficult to open up the imagination space. Based on this background, ENS will naturally consider providing a complete set of data resolution solutions for layer 2, so that users can directly perform domain name resolution and data search on layer 2, reducing their dependence on their respective layer 2 centralized gateways. In short, this solution allows users to use ENS domain names in a secure way without decentralization on each layer2. 1) ENS designed a “layer bridge” with interopeablity interactive communication capabilities, so that each layer2 can retrieve and effectively verify the domain name data of the EthereumMainnet from the off-chain environment. Through this bridging mechanism, the domain name data resolution function of each layer2 and Mainnet is opened, and the ENS short domain name can be safely used on layer2. 2) The EIP3668 mentioned in the document will ensure that the domain name used on the layer2 chain can be correctly verified by the MainnetSmart Contract to avoid the indiscriminate use of the domain name, while the EIP5599 relaxes the original restriction that the domain name must interact with the ENSSmart Contract, and the resolution task can be delegated to an external system (Rollup contract), which greatly enhances the parallel processing ability of the domain name. It is not difficult to see that in order for users to use the ENS domain name normally on Layer 2, the premise is to call and verify the global data on the EthereumMainnet. This means that to enjoy ENS’s set of services, you must use the orthodox Ethereum Data Availablity capabilities, and those layer2s that take shortcuts based on the OP Stack and put DA on third-party DA platforms such as Celestia are not compatible with ENS. At this point, it is not difficult to understand Vitalik’s intentions. I have analyzed in many articles before that after the upgrade of Cancun, layer2 will definitely usher in a big explosion, and various layer2s will spring up like mushrooms, and the modular idea and various Stack component services are breaking the original Mainnet to provide DA+layer2 to provide the boundary of expansion.
In the face of the layer2 territory that is getting out of control, Vitalik will try his best to maintain the legitimacy of EthereumMainnet DA, and the narrative he called for Plasma+ZK to be regarded as a defense war against the legitimacy of DA, and the high-profile promotion of the layer2 domain name data scheme ENS this time is no different.
Because only the DA data is on the EthereumMainnet, Ethereum validators can control the lifeblood of the “security” of layer2 assets. If Validators lose verification control, Ethereum will become a “bulletin board” for layer2 release results, and the layer2 chain’s dependence on Ethereum will be weakened, and to a certain extent, it is unknown whether these layer2 platforms are willing to be the layer2 of Ethereum. Therefore, Vitalik will do everything possible to move the development trajectory of layer 2 towards the legitimacy of Ethereum.
If you look closely, the Crypto world has always been very political.
Of course, ENS is regarded by Vitalik as the most successful non-financial application on Ethereum, and in addition, ENS can indeed bring a friendly experience of using the Blockchain after Mass Adoption, which is in line with the goal of layer 2 to expand the wider web3 crowd in the future.
In short, use ENS to set a set of interoperability specifications and standards for layer2 platforms, and at the same time close the DA control, this move, absolutely!
