With Cosmos in the front and OP Stack in the back, surrounded by powerful enemies, should Polkadot’s market positioning and narrative be adjusted?

Author: PolkaWorld

Dan Reecer shared his thoughts on the Polkadot forum a few months after leaving Polkadot, and put forward some thoughts on Polkadot’s positioning and narrative in the market. His observation and analysis provide us with a new perspective, giving us the opportunity to re-examine the value and possibility of Polkadot.

Dan believes that Polkadot’s positioning of describing itself as an “interoperability solution” does not accurately grasp the key advantages that Polkadot brings to top blockchain development teams. Because what Polkadot provides is only interoperability within Polkadot, and protocols like Axelar, LayerZero, and Wormhole have accounted for most of the transaction volume in achieving full cryptographic interoperability. Interoperability within the Polkadot world can only be advantageous if there is significant user activity and transaction volume across multiple Polkadot parachains.

He cites some recent examples of teams choosing blockchain development platforms:

  • BNB Chain just announced opBNB as the L2 chain of OP Stack. Why would they do this? Because Optimism has momentum, users, liquidity, and is easy to build.
  • Frax just announced Frax Chain as ETH L2. Why? They hope to obtain the liquidity of the ETH main network. They didn’t launch on Polkadot because Polkadot has no liquidity or users, and they don’t need interoperability from Polkadot because that interoperability is only needed if other chains on Polkadot are valuable to interact with.
  • dYdX will launch a chain in the Cosmos ecosystem. They chose to do this because the Cosmos SDK gives them the flexibility, there is a certain amount of strong chains in the Cosmos ecosystem, there is momentum in Cosmos, and there is a certain amount of liquidity in Cosmos.

These chains choose their chain development stack not for the benefit of interoperability, but for ease of development/speed of rollout, and liquidity/user base. Polkadot can provide all of these technical advantages, even better than these competitors, but really needs to solve the liquidity/user problem. Therefore, he believes that Polkadot’s narrative and market positioning need to be adjusted to better attract and meet the needs of the chain development team.

First, he believes that one of the main values that Polkadot can provide is its modularity and customizability. This is the advantage brought by Substrate technology, which allows development teams to flexibly adapt and modify according to their respective use cases. This flexibility not only simplifies the development process, but also allows the team to better adapt to market demands and changes, thereby increasing its competitiveness.

Second, Polkadot’s EVM compatibility is also an important advantage. Through this compatibility, any chain can be compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), thereby taking advantage of Ethereum’s rich application ecosystem and broad user base. This compatibility can not only bring more possibilities to the development team, but also help them gain market acceptance faster.

In addition, the high security that Polkadot provides for its parachains is also one of its important values. Development teams using Polkadot do not need to set up their own validator sets, which reduces the burden on them, while also improving the security and stability of their chains.

Furthermore, from a regulatory compliance perspective, Polkadot’s DOT token can also bring some advantages. Using DOT tokens as the running token of the chain can enable the development team to better comply with relevant regulations and reduce the legal risks they face.

Finally, As a pioneer in blockchain governance, Polkadot’s advantages in on-chain governance cannot be ignored. This advantage can not only improve the transparency and fairness of the platform, but also help the development team to better manage and coordinate their projects.

To better illustrate these points, Dan shares the example of Polygon Supernets. The Polygon Supernets website clearly lays out their benefits: “Polygon Supernets allow you to create high-performance, customizable application chains in a fast and seamless manner, with compliance enforcement options.” This sentence accurately captures the development needs and communicated their strengths effectively.

Going back to Polkadot, we can see that although its technology has been widely recognized, Polkadot still needs to make changes in terms of market positioning and narrative. First of all, Polkadot needs to clarify and emphasize the main value it can provide, including modularity, security, regulatory compliance, and on-chain governance. At the same time, Polkadot also needs to find its own uniqueness to distinguish it from other chain development platforms. This uniqueness may stem from the advantages of its technology, or from its deep understanding of the needs of developers.

Overall, Dan’s analysis and recommendations provide us with a new perspective that helps us gain a deeper understanding of Polkadot’s value and potential. By re-examining and adjusting its market positioning and narrative, the community hopes that Polkadot can stand out in the highly competitive blockchain market and win more support from developers and users.

In fact, any technical product needs a clear and accurate market positioning to guide its development direction and meet user needs. For Polkadot, its positioning must not only accurately reflect its technical advantages, but also fully consider the needs of developers and users. This is a complex process that requires continuous efforts, and it is also an important direction for Polkadot’s future development.

During this process, Polkadot must not only accurately identify and address the needs of developers and users, but also maintain sensitivity to market dynamics in order to adjust its market positioning and narrative in a timely manner. At the same time, Polkadot also needs to continue to optimize and improve its technology to ensure that its technical advantages can be combined with market demand to create greater value. We expect Polkadot to win more support and achieve greater success with a new look!
