Vitalik posts urging that AI frontier development should be slowed down, focusing on paths to deep human-AI integration

PANews July 20 news: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted to explain his views on the evolution of AI capabilities and AGI. He believes humans and machines should be compared using a “multidimensional capability spectrum” rather than a single intelligence metric. He pointed out that three waves of technological innovation—the Industrial Revolution, computers, and LLMs—have greatly expanded machine capabilities, but humans still retain some unique abilities. The key uncertainty, he said, is whether LLMs and their “plug-in ecosystem” will ultimately cover nearly all human capabilities. Vitalik defined AGI as “an AI that can independently maintain civilization even if humans disappear and are uploaded into robots.” He called it an “irreversible point” in humanity’s dominance over Earth, and argued for achieving “deceleration-through-narrow-gates” by enabling open-weight access and adjusting compute incentives. He also advocated a future vision of deep human-machine integration, maintaining a global multipolar order, and keeping Earth’s high-regulation natural protected areas.
