PANews July 14, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced that it has selected 36 payment service providers (PSPs) in the euro area to take part in the digital euro pilot. The pilot will begin in the second half of 2027 for 12 months, conducted by the ECB and 19 euro area central banks, to test features such as digital euro payments, offline payments, e-commerce and in-store consumption, and to optimize the user experience in preparation for the future official issuance of the digital euro. After the ECB issued an expression-of-interest call to euro area payment service providers (PSPs) in March 2026, more than 50 applications were received; ultimately, 36 PSPs from multiple member states were selected to participate, including Deutsche Bank, Adyen, Revolut Bank, Stripe Technology Europe, Worldline, among others. The ECB said that if the EU passes digital euro legislation in 2026, the goal is to have the conditions in place for the first issuance of the digital euro by 2029, and whether it will be officially launched will be subject to a subsequent decision.
