CXMT's IPO Isn't the Biggest Story. The Market Pricing It Before Listing Is.
Every IPO begins with an offer price.
Very few begin with the market trying to rewrite that price before trading has even started.
That's exactly why I believe CXMT deserves more attention than a typical semiconductor listing.
On paper, the numbers are already historic. CXMT opened its STAR Market IPO subscription at 8.66 RMB ($1.28) per share, raising 57.9 billion RMB, making it the largest semiconductor IPO in A-share history. For China's semiconductor industry, this is a major milestone. But for investors, the IPO itself may not be the most important signal.
The real signal is coming from somewhere else.
Within only five hours, Hyperliquid's CXMT perpetual contract attracted $23 million in open interest, overtaking contracts linked to HOOD and MSTR. At the same time, traders pushed the implied valuation to nearly $535 billion—more than 500% above the IPO valuation. Daily trading volume reached $25.7 million, showing that the market wasn't simply reacting to headlines. It was actively trying to price the company's future before the public market had the chance.
To me, that's where this story becomes interesting.
Normally, price discovery begins after a company lists.
In CXMT's case, price discovery has already started on-chain.
Whether the market is right or wrong is almost secondary. What matters is that capital is already competing to express a view on the company's future, and that tells us expectations are exceptionally high.
Another development reinforces that idea.
Over the past week, one whale deposited approximately $75.3 million in USDC while building a long position. A single whale should never be treated as a trading signal, but moves of this size rarely go unnoticed. Large participants generally focus on opportunities where they believe the potential reward justifies the risk, which explains why this transaction quickly became a topic of discussion across the crypto community.
This is also why many traders have started referring to CXMT as "China's memory champion."
But here's the question I'm asking.
Is the market pricing today's business... or tomorrow's potential?
There's a big difference.
A valuation trading more than 500% above the IPO price suggests investors are looking far beyond current financial metrics. They're pricing what CXMT could become if China's push for semiconductor independence continues, if AI infrastructure spending remains strong, and if demand for advanced memory chips keeps accelerating.
That's an ambitious expectation.
History has shown that markets often move ahead of fundamentals during powerful structural themes. We saw it during the internet era, cloud computing, electric vehicles, and now artificial intelligence.
Sometimes those expectations prove justified.
Sometimes reality takes longer to catch up.
From a trading perspective, this is where discipline matters most.
Strong narratives create momentum, but they also create volatility. When expectations become crowded, even positive news can trigger sharp price swings because investors begin comparing results against extremely high assumptions rather than ordinary forecasts.
Gate's CXMT/USDT perpetual contract, offering 1–10x leverage for both long and short positions, gives traders flexibility ahead of the July 27 listing. But leverage should never replace analysis. In markets driven by expectations, protecting capital is often more important than chasing headlines.
Personally, I'll be watching three signals before the listing:
- Does open interest continue rising, or does speculative momentum begin cooling?
- Do whale wallets continue accumulating, or do they start reducing exposure?
- Most importantly, does the public market validate today's aggressive on-chain valuation?
Those answers will tell us far more than the IPO price itself.
For me, the biggest takeaway isn't that CXMT launched a record-breaking semiconductor IPO.
It's that the market has already started competing to value the future before traditional price discovery has even begun.
And when that happens, the opportunity isn't just in following the story.
It's in understanding why the market is willing to price tomorrow before tomorrow arrives.
