ME News message: On April 26 (UTC+8), the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against U.S. Special Forces soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke, accusing him of using confidential information he had access to in order to place bets on the prediction market platform Polymarket regarding the United States’ actions against Venezuela, and of illegally profiting more than $400,000. After Trump learned of the incident, he said it reminded him of baseball legend Pete Rose betting that his own team would win, and he brushed it off, saying: “It’s like Rose betting on his own team to win. If he bets and loses, that’s bad, but if he bets and wins, I’ll investigate it.” Because of Trump’s support for Rose, some of Trump’s allies believe Van Dyke should be pardoned. Trump previously commented that the global situation is like a “casino,” implying that some market trades depend on information asymmetry and even insider information, and he emphasized that he does not support prediction platforms.
