The modern person’s poverty is not just a lack of money—it’s also a lack of the ability to be alone. Smartphones eliminate boredom, but they also destroy many people’s opportunities to truly rediscover themselves. Only when the outside world quiets down can you hear the real questions inside: Why am I alive? Are the things I’m pursuing truly what I want? Much of people’s anxiety isn’t because there’s too much happening—it’s because they’re afraid to face themselves when nothing is happening. Boredom is not emptiness; it’s the moment when life resets and recalibrates its direction. A person who is constantly filled with information finds it hard to think for real; only someone who can be alone has a chance to create their own world.
