🇪🇺 European Parliament Advances the Digital Euro
On 9 July, MEPs backed opening negotiations by:
▫️416 in favour
▫️169 against
▫️22 abstentions
Key proposals:
💶 A digital form of central-bank money issued by the ECB, usable online and offline.
🔐 Privacy protections, with personal data processed only when strictly necessary.
🏪 Most businesses would be required to accept it, with exemptions for certain small businesses and self-employed workers.
🆓 Basic services, including opening an account, holding funds and accessing a payment method, would be free.
⚖️ Individual holdings would be capped to protect financial stability.
🏦 Banks and payment providers across the EU could distribute it.
💵 Cash would remain protected and accessible, particularly for vulnerable groups.
⏭️Next Step
The final legislation must still be negotiated with the Council of the European Union before it can take effect.
