#IranClosesStraitOfHormuz
Iran says the Strait of Hormuz is closed, while the United States denies it is completely shut down. Shipping traffic has significantly decreased due to security risks, but US officials say some commercial vessels are still transiting under protection.
Key developments reported so far include:
* The US has launched a third round of attacks against Iranian military targets, including missile and drone launch sites, naval forces, communications and coastal surveillance systems. US Central Command says more than 300 targets were hit over three nights.
* The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy announced it would close the Strait of Hormuz "until further notice" after an incident involving a commercial vessel that it says ignored navigation orders. Iran says it fired warning shots and forced the ship to stop.
* The United States says the ship was not only not warned, but attacked, and is citing the incident as justification for the recent attacks.
* The Strait of Hormuz normally carries about 20% of global seaborne oil trade; Therefore, any prolonged disruption would have major consequences for global energy markets and shipping.
From a broader perspective, many analysts continue to characterize the conflict as a grey area conflict; that is, a serious military escalation aimed at exerting pressure without triggering a full-scale regional war. However, the risk of miscalculation is significantly increased, especially if both sides suffer significant military or civilian casualties, or if additional countries become directly involved.
At this stage, the situation is highly volatile and should be interpreted cautiously until claims from both sides are independently verified.
