Animal welfare is a mirror of how society treats the vulnerable. What really matters is not whether animals are more important than humans, but whether a society has the ability to restrain violence, protect the weak, and respect life. When a society is willing to treat the most powerless beings with kindness, it is often also better able to establish protections for human dignity and rights.
