True family education is not making decisions for the child, but training his judgment. What parents should do is not just tell him right from wrong, but help him see the benefits, costs, and consequences of his choices. When a child thinks it through and is willing to take responsibility for the outcome, you respect his choice. Childhood is the period with the lowest trial-and-error cost; by repeatedly training him through small matters, you help him develop a decision-making habit of “analyzing value, assessing risk, and taking responsibility for results.” Otherwise, when he grows up and faces life choices, he is likely to get lost and become dependent.
